I have picked up a Braun Paxette that seems a little unusual. At least my research has not turned up an image like this one.

You might be right. I've seen this page before, but I was reading bright frame finder as being a larger viewfinder as on the much later models.
If you look at this chart, the IL has the higher top plate.

You're right. 'L' appears to stand for Leuchtrahmensucher (=bright frame finder).
